115 years of innovation
Since 1909, L'Oréal Groupe has harnessed the power of science and technology to invent and define the beauty of the future. As part of the 41st European Heritage Days, L’Oréal Groupe is proud to open ten emblematic locations that showcase our 115 years of innovation.
Many people think beauty is superficial, but in doing so they are not looking deeply enough. It is a powerful force that creates emotions, helps us build self-confidence and express ourselves at anytime. Beauty is essential.
As the global beauty leader, we are aware of this transformative power of beauty. We have nurtured it from our very beginnings, for 115 years. From the very first synthetic hair dye conceived by our founder Eugène Schueller in 1909, we have constantly innovated to meet the infinite diversity of everyone's desires and aspirations. World firsts mark our history: the first hair lotion (1928), the first sunscreen (1935), the first reconstructed skin (1979), the first eco-designed formula (2000), the first waterless, low energy fragrance extraction process (2024)...
Today, our 4,000 researchers file an average of 600 patents each year and deliver visionary beauty innovations that change our lives. From the first stylist spray Elnett to the cutting-edge infrared hair-dryer AirLight Pro, L'Oréal Groupe constantly imagines the beauty of the future. A personalized, inclusive and responsible beauty - a beauty that moves the world.
Le Visionnaire
L’Oréal's historic headquarters at 14 rue Royale was rebranded in 2023 into "Le Visionnaire – Espace Francois Dalle," a vibrant hub of creativity and collective intelligence dedicated to beauty. Today, it serves as a space for knowledge and learning, immersing visitors in L’Oréal innovation DNA – showcasing our pioneering spirit, our power of innovation, and our unwavering commitment to creativity. Across 4,000 m2, the space unveils the group's history and opens its doors to rooms designed for creation, ideation, and trend forecasting, including a modernized Hairdressing Academy.
Open to L'Oréal employees as well as stakeholders from the worlds of fashion and luxury, key opinion leaders, and journalists, Le Visionnaire brings to life the unique culture that has always driven L'Oréal to create the beauty that moves the world.
L’Oréal Groupe global headquarters
The Centre Eugene Schueller (C.E.S.), named after L'Oréal's founder, serves as the global headquarters for L'Oréal Groupe. Inaugurated in 1978 in Clichy-la-Garenne, France, it stands on the site of the group's first production facility, the former Monsavon factory. It underwent a major renovation in 2014, overseen by French architects Wilmotte & Associés who also designed projects like Station F and the Collège des Bernardins. The firm’s redesign was meant to align with High Environmental Quality standards.
With the addition of "The Loft" in 2019, the C.E.S. now encompasses three buildings, interconnected by a spacious 5,000 m² indoor garden. The headquarters houses the group's corporate functions (finance, communications, executive management, etc.), along with e part of the digital teams and the consumer products division.
The site's 1,900 employees enjoy a work environment that fosters socialization, collaboration, and innovation.
Episkin
Episkin L’Oréal Research & Innovation is one of 20 L’Oréal research centers worldwide (7 are based in France). As a leader in human skin reconstruction for over 40 years, this Lyon-based center develops cutting-edge testing models for biological and dermatological research. Episkin directly supports L’Oréal Groupe's commitment to Beauty Without Animal Testing.
Remarkable scientific and technological advances have led to the development of L'Oréal SKIN TECHNOLOGY. This breakthrough allows us to create inclusive models that mirror the complexity of human skin. These models make it possible to anticipate skin reactions and assess cosmetic products with full reliability and ethical responsibility.
Through these models, L’Oréal deepens scientific knowledge of the skin, elevates testing standards within the cosmetics industry, and scales up the production of reconstructed skin models. These models are then made available across the cosmetics industry and beyond, furthering our collective understanding of skin health.
