Responsibility

Beauty that is sustainable

For over 50 years, L’Oréal Groupe has been dedicated to a more sustainable, equitable, and inclusive beauty industry. Decarbonization, sustainable water and natural resource management, biodiversity or digital sustainability : we have set ambitious targets and achieved results recognized by experts*. To name just a few targets, we aim to achieve 100% renewable energy in our operations by 2025 and to use 100% recycled or reused water in our plants by 2030. Only through innovations can we achieve the sustainable beauty of tomorrow.

In 1995, we inaugurated our first environmental research laboratory. Since then, sustainable innovation has been our driving force. This is evident in innovations like Pro-Xylane (2000), the first eco-designed cosmetic active ingredient derived from green chemistry or Water Saver (2021), a cutting-edge showerhead that uses less water and has already saved more than 300 million liters of water (more than 120 Olympic swimming pools)

Social commitment is also an integral part of our DNA. The L’Oréal Foundation and the social causes supported by our brands complement and nourish our efforts towards a more equitable and inclusive world.

*L'Oréal Groupe is the only company in the world to have been awarded for eight consecutive years, the highest AAA rating from the Carbon Disclosure Project, one of the leading international NGOs committed to environmental and social transparency.

L’ORÉAL O’CAP - 1928

In 1928, Eugène Schueller and L’Oréal launched the very first hair water under the name O’Cap (a contraction of the French term “eau capillaire”). The specificity of this foam lotion? It enabled you to wash your hair and combat dandruff without using water, at a time when hot water hadn’t made its way into many households.

“Wash your hair without getting a cold”, claimed the ads of the time. The success of O’Cap led to the creation of a stand-alone brand, separate from other L’Oréal-branded products, with its own dedicated marketing department. This laid the foundation for what would later become the group with its portfolio of 37 international brands

L’ORÉAL PROFESSIONNEL WATER SAVER - 2022

In a hair salon, the rinsing phase accounts for most of the water consumption. Committed to supporting professional hairdressers in their craft, including reducing their environmental impact, L’Oréal Professionnel has developed Water Saver, a revolutionary showerhead designed in collaboration with hairdressers and the environmental start-up Gjosa. Using patented water fragmentation technology, and recognized as a Time Best Invention in 2021, Water Saver saves up to 69% water at the backbar in hair salons. Up till now, Water Saver has already saved over 350 million liters of water, equivalent to 143 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
