L’Oréal Citizen
The Employee Citizen Engagement Program
L'Oréal has a long tradition of employee volunteering initiatives. Created in 2009, the Citizen Day allows employees of the Group to dedicate a full day, during their working time, to social or environmental non-profit organizations.
L'Oréal has continued to innovate in terms of citizen employee engagement and has developed the L'Oréal Citizen program, offering its employees the opportunity to contribute to causes through several ways such as Payroll Giving, Hackathons for good, crowdfunding campaigns and mentorship.
Over
97,000
hours of volunteering carried out by our employees in 2023 during Citizen Day.
Over
775
non-profit organizations supported in 2023 across 73 countries as part of Citizen Day.
Over
2.3 million
euros donated to partner non-profit organizations worldwide thanks to our Payroll Giving program since 2018.
Every year since 2010, L’Oréal employees around the world can support local non-profit organizations during a day of solidarity on their working hours. Employees can get involved in various initiatives, such as renovating non-profits premises, collecting waste, producing hygiene kits, or setting up well-being workshops for people in vulnerable situations.
In 2023, more than 27,400 employees volunteered in 73 countries to support more than 775 non-profit organizations through 1,220 missions.
Launched in 2018 in France, the Payroll Giving program allows employees to donate the cents from their paycheck to a non-profit organization.
In France, this donation can be supplemented with an additional financial contribution ranging from 1 to 20 euros. L'Oréal is committed to matching employee donations (up to an amount of €100,000 every year).
In 2023, over €231,000 were collected thanks to the participation of more than 2,400 employees in the program (including L'Oréal's matching contribution). This initiative has allowed for a total redistribution of over €1 million to these beneficiary organizations and has notably made it possible to plant nearly 235,000 trees.
To date, 5 countries have already adopted the Payroll Giving system, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Japan.
In order to help our partner non-profit organizations reinvent or make their models sustainable, employees of the Group can take part in a series of digital and in-person Hackathons for good[1]. This new initiative allows employees to join forces with employees from other companies and use their skills for the common good.
Since its launch in 2018, 36 solidarity Hackathons and 9 Incubations have been organized by the L'Oréal Group, enabling over 650 employees to contribute to 36 non-profit organizations. In 2023, 6 solidarity Hackathons and 2 incubations took place, involving more than 240 employees, to support 8 non-profit organizations.
To help young people and contribute to the fight against the inequality of opportunities, the Group has launched in France: Citizen Time - Mentoring Program. It was created in collaboration with the Human Resources (L'Oréal for Youth[2]) and Diversity Equity & Inclusion teams with the aim of supporting the "1 young person 1 mentor" initiative. It offers employees the opportunity to commit, in their personal time, to the beneficiaries of our partner non-profit organizations. Since 2021, nearly 1,000 employees have registered for a mentoring mission, thus growing our community of mentors.
[1] Inspired by traditional Hackathons, or programming marathons – events during which IT developers meet for a given period of time to work on a collaborative project – Hackathons for good are collective intelligence seminars, where participants from different backgrounds work as a team for 1 day on the strategic challenges of associations.
