Supporting the Restoration of Mangroves in Kenya
A Project Supported by the L'Oréal Fund for Nature Regeneration
The L’Oréal Fund for Nature Regeneration has invested in Ceriops, a mangrove restoration project based in Kenya. Mangroves have among the highest carbon densities of tropical forests. They can store large amounts of carbon for long periods & their protection reduces CO2 emissions & supports climate change mitigation. These ecosystems have undergone extreme degradation prompting urgent actions and efforts towards restoration. On the Kenyan Coast, mangrove loss has reached 70% since 1985, causing a sharp decrease in fishery yields and incomes.
Ceriop’s programs shares best practices and promotes community-led actions for the restoration of degraded mangroves ecosystems, also helping coastal populations identify alternate sources of sustainable livelihoods.
