L'Oréal Hong Kong and The Nature Conservancy Join Forces to Restore Oyster Reefs in Hong Kong

In recognition of National Ecology Day on August 15, L'Oréal Hong Kong announces a partnership with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) to restore oyster reefs in Hong Kong. The company will provide an annual funding of HKD 200,000 to TNC in the coming six years, for a total of HKD 1.2 million, to support oyster reef restoration work at Pak Nai in New Territories, a crucial biodiversity hotspot in Hong Kong.

Oyster reefs are precious in protecting marine diversity and improving water quality. However, due to land reclamation and urbanization over the last century, Hong Kong’s coastal areas have seen significant declines in oyster populations and reef habitats. Oysters are the world’s most endangered marine habitat, with an estimated 85% of reefs globally already lost. The oyster reef restoration project led by TNC and supported by L'Oréal Hong Kong aims to enhance biodiversity, improve water quality and conserve the city's coastal ecosystem over the next six years. Promoting biodiversity is a key focus under L'Oréal’s sustainability commitment dubbed “L'Oréal For the Future.”

To raise public awareness of the urgency of oyster reef restoration in Hong Kong, L'Oréal Hong Kong will also partner with TNC and Hong Kong Maritime Museum to host “The Oyster Odyssey Public Info Day” on September 1, from 2 pm to 7 pm, (Admission stops 30 mins prior to daily closing time) at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum. This event will feature a variety of interactive activities for registered attendees, including:

  • Free entry to “The Oyster Odyssey – Restoring Hong Kong’s Lost Treasure” Exhibition
  • Guided tour of “The Oyster Odyssey - Restoring Hong Kong’s Lost Treasure” Exhibition
  • Oyster shell up-cycling DIY workshops

Details of the activities and registration will be announced on the Hong Kong Maritime Museum website later: The Oyster Odyssey: Restoring Hong Kong’s Lost Treasure Exhibition | HK Maritime Museum.

“Protecting biodiversity is very important for a sustainable future. Oyster reefs, as natural habitats for different marine life, are Hong Kong’s lost treasures, and their restoration is vital. This is why our partnership with TNC will help contribute to conserving Hong Kong’s coastal ecosystem.” said Eva YU, President and Managing Director, L’Oréal Hong Kong.

Lulu Zhou, The Nature Conservancy’s Director of Strategic Partnerships, Asia Pacific (Hong Kong), said: “Conservation work requires collective efforts from different stakeholders. We are very thankful for L'Oréal’s support of the oyster reef restoration work. This partnership serves as a great example of how businesses can play an important part in sustainability solutions. We hope more organizations can join forces to protect Hong Kong’s healthy and resilient ocean.”
